Setting up Alternate MFA Methods
Overview
How to set up backup authentication methods including text messages, phone calls, and third-party password managers.
It is highly recommended to set up a secondary MFA method in case you lose access to your primary device. This should be done before you lose access to your old device or phone number.
Method A: Third-Party App or Password Manager (Recommended Alternate Method)
Password managers (like 1Password, Bitwarden, or Keeper) allow you to generate MFA codes on your computer as well as your phone.
Go to https://mfasetup.olemiss.edu and log in.
Click + Add sign-in method.
Choose Authenticator app and click Add.

4. Click the link that says I want to use a different authenticator app.
5. Scan the QR code (or copy the secret key) into your password manager app.
6. Enter the code generated by your app into the browser to verify.
Method B: Text Message (SMS)
Go to https://mfasetup.olemiss.edu and log in.
Click + Add sign-in method.
Choose Phone and click Add.
Enter your mobile phone number and select Text me a code. Click Next.

5. Enter the code sent to your phone to verify the setup.
6. Click Next and Done.
Method C: Phone Call
Go to https://mfasetup.olemiss.edu and log in.
Click + Add sign-in method.
Choose Phone, Alternate Phone, or Office Phone.
-
Enter the number you wish to be called.
Receive the call and press the requested key (usually #) to verify.
